This is a desperation painting.

I was so stuck I chose the image I liked the most and drew it with a colic marker, and then decided to block 'colour' over it.

It's interesting to look at. I might need an abstract phase.

Salt pile

Bench at Charnwood Waters

Another film shot. The colours are really strong, despite the grain.

I love film.

Selfie.

Just got some colour film processed. Some absolutely beautiful photos.

But here's a not so beautiful one.

Grungy though.

Walk around the lake today.

I shot some 35mm film on my Praktica, and 120mm on my Flexaret.

There are a few lovely shots on my Nikon DSLR, and they have turned out beautiful.

Can't wait to see the film shots!

We weren't allowed to say crap when I grew up. So if the last post gets deleted, it's because my mum made me take it down.

Not the easiest painting to take a photo of in a tiny student room, but here is 'Untitled'.

This was one of the best paintings I did in foundation, during the landscape theme. I was trying to draw attention to the environment that we are destroying, with a distraught looking figure.

I painted the face like that to annoy my tutor, and she ended up liking it more this way! It adds a sarcastic note to the painting, and is far more successful like this.

Sorry for being crap at uploading stuff! I'll be putting some of my old foundations paintings and experiments soon, loads of it is still pretty sweet!

This was an image I created in photoshop, making a double exposures. I wanted to create thematic juxtapositions, in this case contrasting a photo of a built up and 'synthetic' street against the biological abstraction of a tree's branches. This was what I was trying to portray a lot in my work in Foundation.

My Flexaret VI came from Slovakia!

I can't wait for my Ilford HP5 120mm to arrive! The viewfinder is beautiful, looking forward to do some portraits and landscape!

A really old painting - from last year.

I painted this in the summer after Foundation, still interesting with juxtapositions in conflict.

I hated it at the time, but it's been lying around in my room since I moved recently. And I like it now! It was never finished, but the concept comes across and matches the level of painting there.

A 'waiting' photo in York. Must have been on the way back from Teesside..

A photo with my new 35mm f1.8 lens, not the perfect photo, but the contrast and clarity is so nice :)

Used the dodge and burn tools for like the first time ever to enhance parts of the image.

Another recent film shot.

I had no idea how beautiful this photo would turn out when I took it. It's my new best photo.

Shot in the Syson gallery in Nottignham. Iona and Rose.

My first 'photoshoot'.

I have wanted to do a environmental portrait shoot for a while, but haven't had an idea that I was happy with until now.

I wanted to do some night photos with really deep contrast, using flashes, and these film shots turned out beautifully, despite the amount of trial and error involved.

I used my Yashica FX-D Quartz, and Kentmere 400 black and white film. Also slaved a flash from the camera to a friend holding it from the side.

The contrast is just beautiful on film, and the sharpness is very good, despite trying to range find and focus in the dark.

Very happy.

Thanks to my additional models, Rory and Rose, and Sophie for holding the flash.

Some recent colour and composition studies...

Trying to develop my painting, and hitting a wall at the moment.

Really intrigued with the moon at the moment. I've been watching films like Moon, Sunshine and Apollo 13, peaking my curiosity in space travel.

I would love to walk on the moon.

This is some of my recent experimentation in my photography.

Taking black and whites of trees and manipulating which angle they are viewed from. It creates these interesting new 'landscapes'. They are quite interesting to look at from other angles as well.

This would translate well to film photography as well.

The one on the bottom is showing up horribly, but you get the idea.

My new favourite thing: book making.

It's quite a long process, especially when using home made paper as well, but it's amazing to use a hardback book made completely by hand.

Just bought some fake leather to make some fancy new covers. And hopeful I could try embossing it as well.

Monday, 10 March 2014

This piece has had quite a drastic change. Originally it was a landscape, with strong shadows, which have now been outlined in bright white.

I am quite interested in the negative space created by shadows; I look forward to where this painting still might go.

The oxyacetylene gas welding workshop we did last week.

I don't know what I was thinking of making but it was a lot of fun to put together. Maybe I'll experiment more with sculpture in future.

A lot of burns on my hands though :(

Check out my Tumblr blog!

I update this more regularly with work in process of my work, throwbacks to old work, and
 thoughts on new pieces.

Got  this new 58mm f2 lens last week, and I absolutely love it.

I also did the film developing workshop last week, so I'm shooting up a few new rolls of black and white film to practice with in the dark room.

Definitely having a big 'photography love' phase.

It was 'painting love' two weeks ago, and sense that might come back soon :)

Thursday, 13 February 2014

Back in the studio after a month off. First painting since a while ago actually.

This was a fun one, using different techniques to create quite a nice jarring effect. It came across well in my group tutorial; everyone was encouraged to discuss my piece, without my explanation, and they all worked out what my thinking process was throughout. It was interesting how much the painting could speak for itself.

Looking to do something it bit more restricted in terms of colour next, but still exploring landscapes and ways to juxtapose them.

My new work is becoming based on the landscape. I am also interested in the idea of negative space, and my work is trying to encapsulate both concepts.

Recent exploration around the Outwoods of Loughborough has given me a collection of photos and new material to draw from. I also have some photos from Captain Cooks monument from back home.
